Emma Holland
Emma Holland is a photographer and collage artist from Melbourne, Australia. She first picked up a camera at aged 6 but wasn’t actually good at taking photos until her teens. By age 14, Emma had been published in multiple outlets including Discovery Channel Magazine Asia, for her photojournalism work of her then-home, Indonesia.
Upon moving back to Australia, Emma received a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Australian National University, during which she was accepted for an exchange semester at the Rhode Island School of Design. During her time in Providence, Emma developed a fascination with suburbia and it’s eclectic monotony, a theme that can be found regularly in her works. RISD also fostered her interest in collage, the medium that would serve her first solo show in 2016 “The Neighbourhood”, a series of tongue and cheek works created from thrifted film scans found in America.
In Melbourne, Emma works both as a photographer and comedian, a combination that has helped her create vibrant images for fellow comics and fringe artists. Her images can often be seen amongst the seas of posters at comedy festivals. This multi-disciplinary combination served as a unique perspective that helped Emma receive a residency from the Museum of Brisbane during their “Artists at Home” initiative in 2020, in which she explored comedy through the lens of collage.
Emma is also captivated by the purposefulness of cinematography and how this translates to stills. Her experiments with coloured lights and saturation is ongoing as she seeks to explore the drama of lighting on comedic subjects.
